Quand Les Poules Auront Des Dents

When pigs fly! The French expression literally translates to "when chicken have teeth". But the sentiment is the same: the impossible, unachievable, unbelievable, unrealizable. In other words: when pigs fly! Like, me buying an ostentatious piece of Cartier jewellery or a $500 tea cup from Wedgwood and Bentley.

I'm not cheap but there are some things I know I will never buy new. I'll never buy chandeliers new; i'll never buy good bone china new; i'll never buy a bergere new and I'll never buy fine jewellery new. I just won't.  I think you can get wonderful teaware at the antiques market (up to 80 pieces) of bone china can be found at a good brocante in Brussels for less than 500 Euros. And, my 32 piece tea ware which I currently use is from the former Czechoslovakia and  only cost me 30 Euros (I have a good eye). As for good jewellery I head straight to German auction house for that. Plus, I feel sure that in this life, I'll never make enough to warrant my spending 500 Euros on a cup. Let's let the 1% have at it.

Spring Fit

I saw blossoms on the trees yesterday. Spring is well on its way. If jeans and things are fitting a little snug I have no one to blame but myself. I am spending the rest of this month going hardcore on the treadmill. You? I get my workout gear at Decathalon, Odlo and Nike.

Warming Up to Cold Function

Do you know, I really hate modern, stark, purely functional design in furniture. Stepping into a home where everything is all Perspex and flatpack furniture with slate tiles, sharp angles makes me feel instantly straight-jacketed. Something about that kind of furniture design--austere, cold function only---makes me think "isms" like "communism" and "fascism". Sounds crazy huh? But for me eclectic interior design looks like freedom, progress and democracy. I am sure I make no sense to you. But it's just how my mind works. I am not into "asylum chic" at all.

But I do feel that if you combine some modern elements with antiques and traditional furnishings and also traditional soft furnishings it can work out to look less severe and actually welcoming.

I think I could work with some of the pieces from Ambi Home's line of furniture. Did you see the clock in that last picture?

The Living Is Not Easy

I am, obviously, uncomfortable with the prospect of going about my business today: another day when Brussels is being held hostage. Would you send your child to school when men with guns are on the loose in the city? Is this the new default for Brussels? The living in this town is not easy.

In the meantime some inspiring living rooms. All pictures are from Pinterest.

Sweet Serenity

Traditional Home Magazine

A bit of madness is taking over my home. Neither the dog nor the child will sit still. In my mind I could run away from it all and live right here in this room.

Mike Chapman The Artist

This last one recently sold at auction for 10,000 Pounds. It's like the minute you discover  nice, affordable art the one percenters  ---or maybe it's those London Hedge Fund jackasses-- swoop in and spoils the party for us bargain hunters. Mike Chapman also sculpts. See more Mike Chapman's work here.
