Have we outgrown breakfronts and china cabinets? Some pieces of furniture are meant to be heirlooms and investment pieces---meant to be bequeathed. A good dining table is one such piece of furniture. And for a long time buffets and sideboards were investment pieces too. But at some stage the sideboard became old-fashioned and its companion piece-- the breakfront-- became too "grandma" to include in the dining room décor. Also for many people they were simply too big and cumbersome to fit into a first home or apartment. But could we re-think that position?
Would you be brave enough to drop off your Dutch armoire or a Chippendale-style china cabinet at the painter's? In that top picture, Kelly Wearstler shows us the flexibility of such a piece. I feel like that breakfront with its red lacquer and gold trim would look entirely appropriate in a living room, home library or office and would give the room a layered and welcoming/homey feel.
