All Saints' Day in Lithuania

Yesterday was All Saints' Day (Hallowmas). It was the day when all the the Lithuanians (all Christians, actually) celebrate the saints...their deceased loved ones. A major exodus descends on all the cemeteries in Lithuania and the police come out to monitor and direct traffic because it is such a crush of people at the cemetery. Very touching but a bit strange for me..

The outcome though is very beautiful. The cemetery at Rokantiskiu which is 800 m away from my house is beautifully lit up with candles and decorated with flowers. It's such a huge event that the flower market takes up residence at the cemeteries every year between the months of October and November. I went out in the snow last night to get some pictures.
